Why is it essential to build self-esteem early in childhood?
My research paper was on the importance of building self-esteem early in childhood. Through my research paper, I learned why it is important for self-esteem to be developed at a young age. Self-esteem is the way in which someone perceives themselves. It is essential to build self-esteem early in childhood because high self-esteem prepares them to face everyday challenges and build strong, positive relationships. I learned the basic components that fall into building self-esteem, which include self-worth, confidence, sense of purpose and belonging, trust, responsibility, decision making, accepting mistakes, contribution and self- discipline. I also learned that children with low self-esteem miss out on many opportunities. They often do not put themselves out there and are afraid to try new things out of the fear that they will fail.
This is a paragraph from my essay that exemplified how this connects to my project.
"Children with low self-esteem often miss out on many opportunities given to them. They tend to avoid activities that may involve speaking, working with a partner or that can lead to disagreements and conflict. Because of this, they are not exposed to elements that are out of their comfort zone. D’Arcy Lyness, PhD says that “having low self-esteem can block success. It can leave kids distracted by the stress of how to deal with everyday challenges” (Lyness, 2016). An overwhelmed child will not handle difficult situations well. They will be too worried about everything that can go wrong and the stress they have rather than learning to deal with these challenges. Children may feel unsure of themselves so they choose not to participate. They then cannot deal with the stress of not living up to expectations or fear that they will not succeed."
This has helped me with my project because it gave me many areas to focus on with my children. Each lesson I do is focused around one of the basic components of self-esteem. Some of the components can be blended in with others but I try to focus on them each separately. I want to build the children's self esteem so that from here on out they take advantage of all opportunities given to them while feeling good about themselves. This will help them to learn more and make the most out of all of their experiences.
